How to Spot Undervalued Pokemon Cards in 2026 — A Collector's Guide

If you've been collecting Pokemon cards for any length of time, you know the feeling: you flip through a binder, spot a card everyone else has overlooked, and wonder whether it's secretly a gem. Spotting undervalued cards before the market catches on is one of the most rewarding skills a collector can develop — and in 2026, there are more opportunities than ever for Australian collectors to find value.

At HOKO Collectables, we're collectors first. We grade every card the way we'd want it graded for ourselves. That perspective gives us a unique view on where hidden value tends to live. Here's what we look for.

1. Cards from Rotating or Forgotten Sets

Every few years, older sets fade from competitive play and collector attention shifts to the newest releases. This is exactly when savvy collectors step in. Sets from two to four years ago that had limited print runs or were overshadowed by a bigger release often contain cards with strong artwork and low supply that simply haven't been rediscovered yet.

Look at sets like Temporal Forces, Paldean Fates, and Prismatic Evolutions. Singles from these sets are available at lower prices now, but as the print window closes and supply dries up, values historically climb.

2. Reverse Holos and Uncommons with Iconic Art

The common wisdom is to chase Rare and Ultra Rare cards. But experienced collectors know that certain Reverse Holos and even Uncommons carry artwork that resonates with fans in a lasting way. Cards featuring fan-favourite Pokemon in dynamic or emotional poses tend to hold long-term appeal beyond their gameplay value.

A card priced at $2 to $5 today with exceptional artwork could be worth significantly more in three years simply because people remember it fondly.

3. Near Mint Cards at LP Prices

One of the most common sources of undervalued cards is inconsistent grading by sellers. We see it constantly: a card listed as Lightly Played (LP) that is genuinely Near Mint (NM) or NM-Mint. This happens when sellers grade conservatively or simply aren't experienced enough to distinguish edge wear from print lines.

Buying from sellers who understand the difference is crucial. At HOKO, LP means LP. Always. But when buying from less careful sellers, you may occasionally find NM cards at LP prices. Knowing how to assess condition yourself is an invaluable skill.

4. Japanese Cards Before English Reprints

Japan is almost always ahead of the English market in terms of releases. A card that's been in the Japanese market for six months often lands in English sets with significant hype — and the Japanese version, which was quietly available at low cost, suddenly jumps in price.

Collectors who track the Japanese release schedule and pick up cards ahead of English announcements can find significant value. This is especially true for Japanese exclusive artwork variants, which sometimes never make it to English markets at all.

5. Graded Cards Below Population Report Expectations

For collectors interested in PSA or BGS grading, the PSA Population Report is essential reading. A card with a low pop (few graded copies) and a strong grade can command a premium. If you understand how to read a pop report, you can identify cards where graded supply is far lower than demand would suggest.

The HOKO Approach

Whether you're buying singles, mystery packs, or sealed product, the principle is the same: buy what you genuinely understand and love. The collectors who consistently find value are those who know the hobby deeply — who have held thousands of cards, studied the market, and developed genuine intuition.

That's exactly why HOKO exists. We're Melbourne-based collectors who've spent 20+ years in the hobby. Every card we sell is graded honestly, packed carefully, and shipped tracked. When you buy from us, you're buying from someone who cares about the cards as much as you do.
