What Is a PSA 10 Pokemon Card? Guide for Australian Collectors

A PSA 10 is the holy grail of Pokemon card grading — a perfect gem mint copy that commands a significant premium over ungraded versions. But what exactly is a PSA 10, and is chasing one worth it for Australian collectors? Here's everything you need to know.

What Is PSA Grading?

PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator) is the world's most recognized card grading company. They authenticate and grade cards on a scale from 1 (Poor) to 10 (Gem Mint). A grade is assigned based on four factors: centering, corners, edges, and surface. All four must be near-perfect for a card to achieve a 10.

PSA 10 Standards

A PSA 10 Gem Mint card must have:

Centering: 55/45 or better on both front and back (some tolerance given to the back).

Corners: Four perfectly sharp corners with no fuzzing, fraying, or wear.

Edges: Clean edges with no nicks, chips, or roughness.

Surface: No print defects, scratches, dents, or imperfections. Holo cards must show no cloudiness or scratch lines.

PSA 10 vs PSA 9 — The Value Gap

The difference in value between a PSA 9 and PSA 10 is enormous for desirable cards. A PSA 10 Charizard ex from the Obsidian Flames set might sell for 3–5x the price of the same card at PSA 9. For vintage cards like Base Set Charizard, the gap is even more extreme — a PSA 9 might sell for $2,000 AUD while a PSA 10 fetches $50,000+ AUD.

How to Find PSA 10 Candidates in Australia

Finding PSA 10 cards starts with knowing what to look for before you submit. When buying cards for grading:

Check centering by holding the card at a slight angle under good lighting. Look for print lines or scratches on the holo pattern using a flashlight at different angles. Inspect corners under magnification — even slight fraying visible to the naked eye usually means a PSA 9 at best.

Japanese Pokemon cards often have better centering and print quality than English versions, making them worth considering if PSA 10 is your goal.

Should You Chase PSA 10s?

PSA 10s are worth pursuing for high-value targets — chase cards from current sets, vintage staples, and desirable alt-arts — where the grade premium justifies the grading cost and risk of a lower grade. For most cards, buying a PSA 10 directly is more reliable than raw-to-grade yourself.
